In ProTOp the export surface is defined as the boundary surface of a combination of material regions. Note that the material regions are combined first to form a single volume region; after that the boundary surface of this single volume region is created. This means that the created surface should always be a closed surface.
The figures below show two examples of exported surfaces in dependence of selected material regions.
